CLOSER TO THE LIGHT
by Bruce Cockburn
Dart to the Heart - cover

There you go
Swimming deeper into mystery
Here I remain
Only seeing where you used to be
Stared at the ceiling
'Til my ears filled up with tears
Never got to know you
Suddenly you're out of here

Gone from mystery into mystery
Gone from daylight into night
Another step deeper into darkness
Closer to the light

Walked outside
Summer moon was nearly down
Mist on the fields
Holy stillness all around
Death's no stranger
No stranger than the life I've seen
Still I cry
Still I begged to get you back again

Gone from mystery into mystery
Gone from daylight into night
Another step deeper into darkness
Closer to the light

"That was written addressed to the late Mark Heard who died recently. He was a fantastic songwriter. His death sent a shockwave through our whole community, and what that did in me was that song." [from "Closer to the Light with Bruce Cockburn" by Paul Zollo, SongTalk, vol.4, issue 2, 1994]

The Canadian singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn wrote "Closer to the Light" as a tribute to Mark Heard, and the song is recorded on Cockburn's album Dart To The Heart (Sony 1994). Bruce also did an acoustic live version of this song for the album Strong Hand of Love - The Radio Special  (Fingerprint Records 1994).
